Diamond Ring Style Terms Explained: Toi et Moi, Hidden Halo & More

A plain-language glossary of ring style terms — Toi et Moi, hidden halo, eternity band, pavé, and more — for anyone who's found themselves Googling a style name mid-purchase.

Ring style names — Toi et Moi, hidden halo, three-stone, eternity band — get thrown around in product listings as if everyone already knows what they mean. If you've found yourself Googling a style name mid-purchase, this glossary is for you.

Toi et Moi

French for “you and me,” a Toi et Moi ring features two distinct gemstones set side by side, rather than a single centre stone — often two diamonds of different or matching shapes, symbolising two people joined together. A genuinely different visual statement from a traditional single-stone ring.

Hidden Halo

A ring that looks like a simple solitaire from directly above, but reveals a ring of smaller accent diamonds encircling the base of the centre stone when viewed from the side. Gives the visual boost of a halo setting (making the centre stone look larger) without the fuller, more maximalist look of a traditional visible halo.

Three-Stone Ring

A centre diamond flanked by two smaller side stones, traditionally interpreted as representing a couple's past, present, and future. One of the most enduring symbolic ring styles.

Eternity Band

A band with diamonds set continuously around its entire circumference, rather than only across the front. Because diamonds run all the way around, eternity bands are typically difficult to resize — worth confirming your size carefully before ordering this style specifically.

Half Eternity Band

The same continuous diamond-set concept as a full eternity band, but diamonds run across only the front half or two-thirds of the band rather than the complete circumference — more resizable than a full eternity band, and often more comfortable against the palm side of the hand.

Toi-Et-Moi vs Two-Stone Ring

These terms are often used interchangeably, though “two-stone ring” is the more generic English term and “Toi et Moi” specifically carries the romantic “you and me” framing — the design itself is typically the same.

Bezel Setting

A setting where a thin metal rim fully encircles the diamond's edge, rather than holding it with prongs. More secure and better protected against knocks, at the cost of showing slightly less of the diamond's surface than a prong setting.

Pavé Setting

French for “paved,” a pavé setting covers a band's surface with small diamonds set closely together, creating a continuous sparkle effect along the metal. Like eternity bands, heavily pavé-set rings are harder to resize.

Kada

A broad, substantial bangle style rooted in Indian jewellery tradition, typically rounder and wider than a slim oval bangle — covered in more detail in our Bangles & Bracelets Guide.

Mangalsutra

A traditional Indian pendant, typically on a black bead chain, symbolising marriage — covered in full in our Mangalsutra Guide.
