IGI and GIA are both major diamond grading laboratories, and buyers often assume one is simply “better” than the other. The real answer is more specific: they use comparable grading methodology, but they've historically specialised differently — and that specialisation matters more for lab-grown diamonds than most buyers realise.
What Both Labs Actually Do
IGI (International Gemological Institute) and GIA (Gemological Institute of America) both grade diamonds on the same fundamental 4Cs scale — Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat weight — using comparable methodology and equipment standards. Both are independent, non-selling laboratories, meaning neither has a financial stake in the diamonds they grade.
Where They Differ
GIA built its reputation primarily grading mined diamonds over decades and is often considered the historical benchmark in that segment. IGI has been the more dominant lab specifically in lab-grown diamond grading, having invested earlier and more heavily in lab-grown-specific grading infrastructure and inscription technology. Today, the substantial majority of lab-grown diamonds sold globally carry IGI certification, not because GIA can't grade lab-grown stones, but because IGI's volume, turnaround time, and infrastructure for lab-grown specifically are more developed.
Does the Grading Itself Differ in Strictness?
This is genuinely debated within the industry. Some gemologists and buyers have observed that grading standards can vary slightly in practice between labs, even when the stated methodology is the same — an IGI-graded stone and a GIA-graded stone described at the identical grade may not always look perfectly identical side by side. This is a real, discussed nuance, not something either lab publicly quantifies. For most buyers, this micro-variation matters far less than simply ensuring the stone is certified by a reputable, independent lab at all.
GLI — A Third Option
GLI (Gemological Laboratories) is a separate certification body used alongside IGI in India specifically, following the same 4Cs methodology. Like IGI, GLI issues verifiable report numbers with laser inscriptions on the diamond's girdle.
What Actually Matters for You as a Buyer
The single most important thing is independent certification of some kind — IGI, GIA, or GLI — with a report number you can verify yourself on the lab's own database, rather than taking a seller's word for a diamond's specifications. Whichever lab certified your stone, verifying it yourself takes under a minute and costs nothing.
Certification at Inasha Diamonds
Every diamond we sell is certified by IGI or GLI. IGI-certified stones can be verified free of charge at report.igi.org using the report number laser-inscribed on your diamond's girdle. If you have a specific preference for GIA-certified stones, contact help@inashadiamonds.com to discuss availability for custom orders.
